Save money by making your own baby food!

homemade baby food
When my youngest began eating solid food I made a decision to make my own baby food. I wish that I had realized sooner with the other two how much easier and more inexpensive it is to make my own! My oldest, who is now eleven years old, was fed with jarred baby food until she could feed herself and then it was table food from that point on.
My now three year old had jarred food for a few months then I bought a food mill. Oh my, what a wonderful invention. I could grind up just about any fruits or veggies and feed them to her. The only draw back was that any kind of meat and certain veggies, like green beans, were really difficult to grind and took forever to push though.
Fast forward to my youngest child, she has eaten nothing but “table food”. I used a mini food processor/chopper that I had picked up at some point for salsa and it worked like a charm. I pureed steamed veggies, fruits, meats, rice….everything for her! She basically ate the same foods that we were eating and because I could run larger amounts through the chopper I was able to freeze more. No extra money being spent on baby food and I feel like I have had more control over the quality of her food, bonus for me!

My biggest tip would be to look for in-season and/or on-sale produce and buy it in bulk! For example, at one point a local farm had a wholesale deal on blueberries fall through. This resulted in them slashing the price in half! I picked up 12 quarts for only $1.50 each! Since I was able to prepare and freeze multiple portions I not only saved time but money as well.

Convenience and saving money all in one? You can’t beat that with a stick! Have you tried making your own baby food? I would love to hear your tips and tricks!

Thanks for sharing this… I picked up a mini processor yesterday and some on-sale produce this morning as you recommended! Looking forward to making food all afternoon and while I’m spending a bit up front I know it’ll payoff in months to come!
