Today is Grandparent’s Day! Did you get Nan and Pop something special? Did you forget? Perhaps you didn’t even know? Most aren’t aware that there is actually a day to celebrate grandparents and all they add to our lives.
The History
In 1978, President Carter declared that Grandparent’s Day would be celebrated annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
How to Celebrate
Why not plan a bit of a celebration? Perhaps have an small family gathering, or a large family BBQ! Honour everything grandparents add to our families and society. From wisdom to life itself, they are our roots. Make sure to spend the time together on this day!
Gift Ideas
A nice hand-made card from the grandkids is always special. So is a personalized calendar full of family pics. My favourite idea for a gift is the Grandchildren’s Delight CD by Daria.
We’ve been listening to it for a couple of weeks not in our home. Poppet loves all the different beats and rhythms. I love the memories of songs that my grandparent’s took the time to teach me. It’s a perfect gift for your children to share with their grandparents. Let’s keep these songs alive! Let’s use them to keep the connection between the generations vibrant and fun! Not only is this a Grammy Nominated CD, but it is also a Parent’s Choice Award Winner!
Don’t just take my word for how good it is. Poppet’s been wiggling her little bottom all over the house in dancing approval! You can also follow Daria on Facebook and Twitter!

Aww this is a great reminder. My grandparents are long since passed but I remember them often. I love that they do this seeing as in our culture, these days, our grandparents are often relegated and tossed aside. That multi-generational influence is so important.

How sweet – I listened to some of her videos on her website. I love that the first one is influenced by the South African band as that’s where I am from :)

My father-in-law is in the hospital, and has been for days. When we go to visit him today I can now have the little one give him and grandma a Happy Grandparent’s treat. :)
So sorry to hear that! Hope it brightens his day!
Thanks, Liz. :)
The kids spent the day with their grandparents and great grandma today.

Thank you for this TIMELY reminder!!!
We announced our first pregnancy on Grandparent’s Day. We invited our parents for dinner. For dessert, we had gotten a cake that said, “Happy Grandparents’ Day.” It was soooo fun watching our four parents as the meaning sank in. Squeals, giggles, cake (and a little pregnancy nausea for good measure) made it the best grandparents’ day ever!
