If you’re like me, you probably have some aspects of laundry day that you downright dislike. Â To start with, I hate sorting laundry, and used to just throw everything in together. Â But I noticed that my whites would end up dingy as they absorbed dye from the garments they were washed with, so that put an end to it, and I’m now a diligent laundry sorter. Â I also supremely dislike folding clothes, which seems unending with teeny tiny toddler items that pile up faster than anything else around here. Â How to go about making life a little easier on laundry day?
Pre-sort your clothing
This is my favourite, and one of the easiest things to do. Â Have 2 separate laundry hampers in your home. Â One holds all the light coloured clothing, and one holds only the darks. Â Then it really is super easy to just throw it in the wash and get on with your day.
Pre-treat stains
We keep a bottle of stain remover in a closet right beside the hamper. Â As soon as a soiled garment comes off it gets a quick squirt and then thrown in the correct hamper. Â It really cuts down on ruined clothes. Â Once a piece of stained clothing goes through the dryer it is almost impossible to remove the set in stain. Â This one step alone will save you many dollars worth of discarded clothing.
Have individual clean clothes baskets
I had a friend who came from a large family. Â When the laundry was done, her mum would put all the clothing from one individual in a basket. Â When they got home from school they would grab their basket, fold their clothes and put them all away. Â I personally don’t like a lot of wrinkles in my clothes, but I do like the idea of putting an individuals folded clothes in a basket just for them and letting them put them away themselves.
Hang anything to be ironed as soon as it comes out of the dryer
If you hang an item while it is still warm from the dryer, there will be far fewer wrinkles to remove.
Invest in the highest quality iron you can afford
Once I had an expensive iron, I quickly realized how much it was worth every penny of its cost. Â The difference between taking 3-4 minutes to iron a dress shirt, and taking only 1 minute truly adds up when you have an entire pile to work your way through. Â Go for the best iron you can afford. This is one time you don’t want to skimp.
Happy laundering!

I just ruined two of my kids’ new shirts – dried the stains :(
I also dislike putting away the clothes like the previous person. I realy do wish there was a laundry fairy!

Oh Laundry… Yikes! Well someone has to do it.. ME. I have no problem with this, but sometimes I get busy and a load may stay in the washer (yikes- rewash!) or in the dryer (redry)… what I have a problem with is the pile that has accumulated on my ironing board to iron! I don’t mind it all that much, ironing that is… and I have to have my clothes ironed… love that nicely pressed look… it’s just always finding something better to do, better than ironing that is. LOL! Ok… off to ironing. Thanks for the {gentle} push Elizabeth!

I don’t mind doing laundry…and believe in sorting through the whole process. Of course, I make my teenage daughter do her own laundry, too!

Tomorrow is actually my laundry day and sometimes I really love it because it can even have benefits for me..
Have individual clean clothes baskets- we do this one for sure
I don’t mind pre-sorting and I don’t mind folding afterwards but it’s putting them all away that gets to me. Maybe I just get tired at that point. lol
With 5 kids, it’s a lot to do so all of my children except the baby put away their own clothes but the big kids help supervise the younger ones to make sure they do it correctly.
I make my kids put up their own clothes as well. It makes a huge difference.
Isn’t it funny that we all have just one or two things we don’t like about laundry?!! I don’t like folding and putting away. But I like starting the laundry! Did I really say that? :) Here’s another thing that helps me with the kids clothes – wash all pants, then wash all shirts. Believe it or not this really helps me to feel less overwhelmed with the folding and putting away – fewer folding piles! And I do have one of those 3-bin hampers to sort – love it! btw, since you have 5 tips here, would you like to guest post this on my Five Tips Friday series? LMK, Nan
