One of my favorite workouts by far has got to be Pilates. I was first introduced to it in early 2002. I had a Pilates for Dummies workout video, and it was the first step on the road to wellness after being too ill to work out for nearly 5 years. I found the mat exercises easy to manage, and looked forward to my daily workout. It was also a great stress reliever, and I really enjoyed the results I got. If you are not into the traditional exercise of weight lifting, or going for a jog, you may want to give Pilates a try. You never know, you too might just end up looking forward to getting fit!
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900′s. Basic Pilates does not require the use of any equipment, rather it uses your own body weight to build long, lean muscle tone (think ballerina, not body builder). This too is one of the reasons I’m so fond of Pilates as a regular exercise routine for women in particular.
There are many online sites with videos and instructions on Pilates mat exercises. One of the easiest for beginners can be found at About.com, where they have 12 basic Pilates exercises with videos. There is also a comprehensive YouTube channel with free Pilates workouts.
And if you should expecting a Poppet of your own, as long as your health care provider gives you the go ahead, Pilates is a low impact, effective workout for expecting Mums!
