“Hello Young Man! Hello Young Lady!”
Are we in the right place? I mean, young, perhaps if we stretch the definition a bit (or more than a bit), but what customs agent in their right mind offers such a joyful greeting right out of the gate before he’s even found out if you’re smuggling drugs or not? Apparently US Customs Agent Marsh does! What a breath of fresh air! Usually, but unfortunately understandable, agents or police officers in carrying out their duties can become distrustful, perhaps even a little bitter, or badge heavy, or just blah. Agent Marsh is anything but. He even said he was going to ask if I was Hubby’s daughter until he saw Poppet in the back, but he said he could see I was well taken care of. When I told him that he was to date, by far, my favourite customs agent I’ve ever encountered, he said 2 things: one was that life throws you curves, so you gotta go with it and enjoy it, and the second was that he felt too many forget that such a job entails interaction, not always a heavy hand.
During our brief stay at his stall we learned that he’s been on the job for 34 years, loves his wife (evident by wonderful way he refers to her as his bride), and has 5 children because his father never told him where they came from! We cross at this border often, and really hope we get to run in to him again. And as we drove away he gently said “now drive safe with your lovely family!” He was a true delight!
