365 Days of Blessings – Day 53 – Board Games
I am thankful for games
We played a bunch while we were at the cottage. Classics. Risk, Masterpiece. Even some new ones like Space Munchkin! They help to make some of the best memories and bring laughter into a home. Even an impromptu game of improvisation with props had us crying with glee at times! If you haven’t in a while, blow the dust of an old game, or buy a new one, and spend an hour or two around the table!

365 Days of Blessings – Day 52 – Tea Time w/ Poppet
I watched Poppet on the kitchen floor, mesmerized by her new tea set from Tucky. She drew me in with her wee smile and we sat and had tea together. Priceless!
I am thankful for tea time with Poppet

Frenzied Friday – I just may, in fact, be too old for the toboggan hill!
Had a great week up at a cottage near Wasaga Beach. Was mild when we arrived, but by Tuesday we were in a winter wonderland!
We decided to head out skating. The first place we arrived had a skating schedule posted on the community board, but no ice! We headed into Midland. Turns out they have a great community centre and we were just in time for the Tim Horton’s free skate. 1/2 an hour of waiting to have very rusty skates sharpened, and I was ready to grace the ice. Visions of pirouettes were filling my imagination. I didn’t fall, but that was about as graceful as it got for the next 45 minutes. We warmed up at the snack bar with good old Canadian Poutine and headed outside.
We went to take a peek at a toboggan hill just outside the rec centre. It looked small, and like a lot of fun. The men convinced us it would be a good idea to head to Walmart and pick up some crazy carpets. If you don’t live in the far north and have never had the honour of barreling downhill on one of these death traps you are missing out! It is really just a piece of slippery plastic that you try to cling to as you proceed faster and faster to a white fluff induced injury!
Did I mention we left all the “kids” at home on this outing? At least the ones under 5 ft. tall. There were exactly five 30 something year olds and one 60 something. All kids for the day!
We headed back to the hill. Not wanting to be the one to look like I was afraid of what lay ahead, I jumped out of the van, unrolled my carpet, plopped my butt on it, and away I went! Weeeeeeeeee! Okay, that was fun! Back up the hill I went. This lasted exactly 5 runs, sometimes racing a friend, sometimes losing the carpet part way down, but always a lot of fun.
On the next run it started to go a little south. I fell off sideways, heard and felt a crack in my neck, and thudded my head on the not so soft snow. Got up, nothing broken 9but my pride) and up the hill I went. I think there might have been only one more “clean” run before my legs were too tired to go again. When the men were finished racing and borrowing all the cool sleds from kids on the hill we headed home.
That night, my ankles hurt a little from the skating, but overall I was feeling great! We built a snowman with the kids, named him “Frank” (he toppled over as soon as the pics were taken) :-( , we had dinner, played some games and we went to bed.
After 8 hours of not moving I awoke to Poppet wanting to be fed. Tried to get out of bed. My body moved, but I think my head was still stuck to the pillow. Ow! My neck really was sore! Worked through yesterday, and felt pretty good by the end of the day. We drove home from the cottage and went to bed. Another night of not moving and today my head is bent at an odd 45 degree angle (okay, not that bad, but stiff as all get out!) Had grandiose plans of laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. But looks like I’m going to spend the rest of the day trying to convince Poppet that she really has no essential needs and can fend for herself. And so, as I expect this Friday to not be as Frenzied, I think I’ll leave my recap of the week in its place!

365 Days of Blessings – Day 51 – Snow
Although we’ve been missing any real snow on the ground this winter so far, I am still very thankful for its existence. The eager anticipation of its falling is all I need to keep me going! I know it will come sooner or later. Until then, we’ve created a winter wonderland for Poppet in our living room. Igloo, skating and sledding and all included!
I am thankful for snow

Thrifty Thursday: Mom’s Abacus!
We all know I love a thrift store find. One of my latest is something that Poppet has claimed as a new toy. However, I really plan to claim it back if another baby ever comes along.
When Poppet was born, the midwives gave me the typical new mom sheet. On it I was to record her temperature, my temperature, how many p & p’s were in her diaper, how many feedings she had. And with all that I was supposed to also remember which side she last nursed on so I could offer the other side at the next feeding. All of this as I was in an exhausted haze. I’ll tell you a little secret. I neglected those sheets after the first 2 days and started to make stuff up to look good when the midwives were coming to visit. Poppet was thriving and it was all I could do just to get breakfast before 4 pm!
If I had my latest thrift store find I would never have needed to fib my way through those first couple of weeks.
Sorry the picture is so small, but it is literally the ONLY one I could find online. Seems they’re not made anymore. Really a shame! Guess we are all app’d out Mummies these days. But I love the simplicity of this! It has little blocks, just like a regular abacus. and all you do is slide them across. Dirty diaper? Slide a block. Wet? Slide another. Just fed the baby? Well, you get the picture. It even has a single block that you slide from right to left for which side you nursed your Poppet on last. I love the simple colours. It is VERY unobtrusive. Sure wish they were still around. Would make a perfect addition to any nursery! I paid a whopping $1.99 for it! It was worth every penny! Even if Poppet is the only one who ever gets to play with it!

365 Days of Blessings – Day 50 – Skating
Between leaning forward and backwards in this unexpected ab workout that I just know I’m going to pay for later, I feel almost graceful on the ice. Like a prima ballerina with metal strapped to her foot! Although I mostly look like a seal trying to make it to the water’s edge, in my mind I’m a pro!
I am thankful for skating
You’ve got to give in to denial at least some of the time!
