Co-sleeping
Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone. Poppet is 1 year old, and we still co-sleep.
Yes I know what the government says about SIDS and co-sleeping, but for us it has been the best solution. It started out of necessity. I had broken my tailbone when giving birth and was unable to comfortably move for quite a bit. On top of that, Hubby returned to work 2 days after the birth. We went to the store, bought a co-sleeper, and so began our current state. We have found it indispensable for our travelling as hotels do not always supply cribs you would want to place an infant in.
Here’s how it works in our house:
1) Until she was big enough, and had full neck control, she slept in an in-bed bassinet type co-sleeper
2) We short sheeted our bed (the sheets only come to our waist)
3) We wear long sleeves to bed to compensate
4) There is a toddler rail on my side of the bed
5) We do not use pillows
6) Poppet wears a sleepsack at night. She sleeps between us at head level, or between me and the toddler rail
7) We are not overweight, do not smoke, do not drink excessively
We have taken every precaution to ensure safety and success in our co-sleeping. Some ask how Poppet will ever learn to sleep on her own. I like to reply that there is no 30 year old still co-sleeping with his parents. But in all honesty, it does not seem to be a big issue. She takes all her naps in her crib in her own room and starts every night in her own crib. I only bring her in when she first wakes. (usually between 12:30 and 2:30 am.)
So now you know! I also like to baby-wear. But that is another story for another day!
